UK Government Announces New Measures to Simplify the obtention of UKCA

On June 20, 2022, the UK Government announced various changes to make it easier for manufacturers to apply the UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking.

What is the UKCA mark?

As of January 1, 2023, manufacturers of electronics, machinery, toys and some other products (excluding medical devices) must use the UKCA mark. The UK Conformity Assessed mark (UKCA) is a compulsory requirement for specific products sold in England, Scotland and Wales. It implies that the products comply with the Great Britain legislation. Most products, which, before Brexit, required the CE marking, will require the UKCA mark.

What are the new measures?

To simplify the process of attaining the UKCA marking, the UK Government has announced the following measures:

Reducing re-testing costs:

Conformity assessments undertaken by EU bodies before the end of 2022 will be the foundation for the UKCA marking next year. Manufacturers will be able to apply the UKCA on these products without the need to undergo new tests.

Removing the need to re-test existing imported stock

There will no longer be a need for re-testing and recertification for CE marked products imported into the UK market before December 31, 2022.

Continuing to accept spare parts into the GB market

Spare parts used to repair products in the market will continue to be accepted if they comply with the requirements that were in place whenthe original devices enteredthe market. This measure will avoid stock issues.

Extending labelling measures

Due to the future law, important information and other UKCA markings might be allowed to be added to products using a sticky label or an accompanying document until December 31, 2025.

Recognising testing on construction products under AVCP system 3

Manufacturers of construction products under AVCP system 3 do not need to undergo a testing through a UK-approved body if a EU notified body tested their products before January 1, 2023.
